If you shop in-store (excluding Tesco Express and Tesco Petrol Filling Stations) or online at Tesco, we'll take the difference (or the maximum Tesco Brand Guarantee limit of £20) off the price of your shop before you pay.
To qualify, you'll need at least 10 Different Products, including one Comparable Branded Grocery Product in your basket. For example, if you buy 9 different unbranded fresh vegetable products and one bag of Cadbury Bitsa Wispa 110gm then your basket will qualify for Tesco Brand Guarantee. However, if you buy 6 different unbranded fresh vegetable products, three cans of Heinz baked beans 415gm and one bag of Cadbury Bitsa Wispa 110gm, your basket will not qualify as you have bought three identical products meaning your basket does not have 10 Different Products.
Asda - we take prices daily from the Asda grocery website.
Morrisons - twice-weekly in-store price checks.
Sainsbury's - we take prices daily from the Sainsburys grocery website
We use an independent agency to check the prices for us.
Brands are easy to match, as long as Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's sell the same products and pack sizes as we do.
Example Soft Drink - 330ml multi packs
8 x 330ml
12 x 330ml
15 x 330ml
24 x 330ml
30 x 330ml
We compare Individual Cans against Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's because all three plus Tesco, sell individual cans of the product
We only compare the 12 x 330ml product against Sainsbury's, because Asda and Morrisons don't offer this pack size
The 15 x 330ml product wouldn't be in your basket, because it isn't offered in Tesco stores
We aren't able to compare the 30 x 330ml product, because it isn't offered by Asda. Morrisons and Sainsbury's
For illustrative purposes
Our Price Team matches as many Tesco products as possible with Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's. Even though we've been checking competitor prices for over 15 years, sometimes it's just not possible to get a match. Here are some reasons why:
Sometimes products that you can buy in Tesco aren't available at Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's, so we can't match them.
For example, we sell Pilgrim's Choice Mature Cheddar 550g. Asda don't sell Pilgrim’s Choice Mature Cheddar, so we can't compare the price with Asda.
Tesco and Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's may stock the same product but in a different size, weight, volume or quality. If there is a difference then the products cannot be fairly matched, because we would have to estimate the comparable price:
For example, we sell an 8, 12 and 24 pack of 330ml Coca Cola. Asda sells an 8 pack. If you buy our 24 pack, we can't compare the price with Asda.
The fairest way to get accurate prices for Asda and Sainsbury's is to get them online. However, sometimes a product is not available online, so we can't get a price to compare against. If certain products are unavailable when checked, then they will be excluded from Tesco Brand Guarantee.
There are two primary reasons why you may not get a Tesco Brand Guarantee result. Check to make sure you:
For further details of what constitutes a 'Different Product' and 'Comparable Branded Grocery Product', please refer to our Terms and Conditions.
A Branded Product is any product that has a non-Tesco branded name on it, such as Coca-Cola, Colgate and Cadbury. Branded Products include pre-packed branded groceries, such as Gressingham Duck. Branded Products do not include loose fresh food, such as bakery goods, deli products including fresh fish and meat, and loose fruit and vegetables.
A Comparable Branded Grocery Product is any Branded Grocery Product that is identical in all respects, including in size, colour, variant, flavour etc., to a product sold by at least one of Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's. For example, a 6 pack of Diet-Coke cans is not comparable with an 8 pack of Diet-Coke for the purposes of Tesco Brand Guarantee.
A Branded Basket is your total basket of Comparable Branded Grocery Products. In Tesco Brand Guarantee, the total price of your Branded Basket will be compared with what your Branded Basket would have cost you at Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's.
Tesco Brand Guarantee applies to groceries at our Metros, Superstores, Extras and to Tesco online grocery shops at tesco.com/groceries.
Tesco Brand Guarantee does not apply in Tesco Express stores and Tesco Petrol Filling Stations.
Tesco Brand Guarantee applies to all Comparable Branded Grocery Products where a match can be found in at least one of Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's.
For example Warburtons Medium Sliced Whole Bread 800g and Colgate Toothpaste Total Pro Inter 75ml.
All non-grocery products are excluded from Tesco Brand Guarantee, including, for example, Fuel, in-store concession purchases, tobacco etc.
There's more information on product inclusions/exclusions please see our Terms and Conditions
Yes. We compare price cuts and most promotions – in Tesco and at Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's. Included are:
Multibuy – including for example 'buy-one-get-one-free', 'buy 2 for £3' and '3 for the price of 2'. Price cuts – for example, a discount from 99p to 50p Multiple offers on the same range – this is when Tesco or a competitor has more than one offer on the same products running at the same time, for example 'buy 2 for £3 or buy 5 for £6'. However, there are some promotions that make it difficult to make a fair comparison - no matter who's running the offer. The promotions we don't include are:
Linksave - for example, meal deals or when you buy cheese and get the crackers free. Category-wide - for example, 'buy any six bottles of wine and get 5% off'. Store specific offers – this is because we collect our price data for Asda and Sainsbury's online. Clearance lines – for example 'reduced to clear £1'. Promotions that apply to a whole basket shop, for example, £5 off £40, because this will include non-branded products % extra free promotions, as this would mean that is non-comparable as it is a different pack size. Savings from customer coupons, vouchers and/or colleague discount cards are not included in the Tesco Brand Guarantee comparison.
One item may have been cheaper somewhere else. But another item may have been cheaper from us. So to work out the overall difference, we look at all of the Comparable Branded Grocery Products that together make up your Branded Basket.
This ensures that you won't pay more for your comparable branded grocery shop than you would at Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's.
The main reasons why we can't match some products are:
Tesco has a different range than Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's, so it's not possible to match everything. For example, we sell a 500g and 1kg pack of Utterly Butterly. Asda don't sell Utterly Butterly. If you buy Utterly Butterly, we can't compare the price with Asda.
Tesco and Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's may stock the same product but in a different size, weight, volume or quality which cannot be fairly matched, because we would have to estimate the comparable price: For example, we sell an 8, 12 and 24 pack of 330ml Coca Cola. Asda sells an 8, 12, 15 and 30 pack. If you buy our 24 pack, we can't compare the price with Asda.
Asda or Sainsbury's may stock a product in store, but it's not listed on their website: For example, we sell chicken and sweetcorn sandwiches online, but Sainsbury's only sell the equivalent sandwich in stores.
All examples are for illustrative purposes only.
Yes, £20. This means that even if your Branded Basket would have been more than £20 cheaper at Asda, Morrisons or Sainsbury's a maximum of £20 will be deducted from the total cost of your shop.
Yes. However, Morrisons does not have stores in Northern Ireland. As a result, the Tesco Brand Guarantee only applies to Asda and Sainsbury's in Northern Ireland.
On rare occasions we might experience a temporary technical error, which means we can't instantly deduct the difference before you pay between the total price of your Branded Basket and the cheapest of Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury's. If this happens, we'll give you a voucher for the difference, which you can use in your next Tesco shop (subject to terms).
For further details, please see the questions below and our Terms and Conditions or feel free to contact our Customer Services support team.
